Why a Yearly PMU Refresh Matters — and When It Might Not Be Necessary

Permanent Makeup (PMU) is an incredible way to simplify your beauty routine, giving you long-lasting definition and color in your brows, eyeliner, or lips. But like any cosmetic procedure, it’s not entirely "set-it-and-forget-it" — over time, pigment fades and subtle changes can occur. This is where a PMU refresh comes in.

What Is a PMU Refresh?

A PMU refresh, sometimes called a color boost or touch-up, is a maintenance appointment that helps restore pigment intensity, definition, and shape. Typically recommended once a year, this session is designed to prolong the life and vibrancy of your permanent makeup without having to start from scratch.

Why an Annual Refresh Can Be Beneficial

Every skin type and lifestyle is different, but most clients begin to see gradual fading around the 12-month mark. Here's why booking a refresh around this time is often advised:

  • Color Retention: Pigments naturally fade due to sun exposure, skin regeneration, and lifestyle factors. A refresh helps restore the original depth and tone.

  • Shape Maintenance: While major shape shifts are rare, subtle changes in the skin or facial muscles over time can slightly alter how your PMU looks.

  • Even Fading: Refreshes help even out patchy fading, especially in areas where pigment may have faded faster.

But… Do You Always Need a Refresh Every Year?

Not necessarily — and that’s perfectly okay.

Some clients experience slower fading, especially if:

  • You have drier or more mature skin

  • You follow excellent aftercare and sun protection

  • Your initial pigment retention was strong

In these cases, a refresh may only be needed every 18–24 months. The key is to evaluate your PMU regularly and book a consultation if you’re unsure.

Signs You Might Be Due for a Refresh:

  • Your PMU has faded noticeably in color or sharpness

  • The shape has softened or blurred

  • You find yourself reaching for pencils or liners again

  • It’s been over 12–18 months since your last session

Final Thoughts

Think of your yearly PMU refresh as a preventative touch, like getting your hair colored or skin exfoliated. It ensures your PMU always looks its best, but it isn’t mandatory for everyone. The most important factor? Listening to your skin and working with a trained PMU artist who can guide you on what’s best for your specific case.
